We believe in the power of words - otherwise we wouldn't be writers. We believe that when people come together to send a focussed message, it creates positive ripples.
We are aware that authors have several demands on their time, but we welcome them to make a change by joining our annual hashtag campaign followed by a single voluntary action to which they may contribute as much as they can.
This is a grassroots hashtag campaign that began in April 2020, when the community of authors (especially those writing for children and young adults) came together to send a message encouraging readers to take COVID-19 seriously. The team that came together spontaneously decided to make this an annual event, during which authors coalesce to send a strong, nuanced and sensitive social justice message and follow up with a voluntary action. In 2020, this voluntary action will be a book drive, in conjunction with Books Are Wings, and in future years, #AuthorsTakeAction is honored to partner with #WNDB to help hone the social justice message.
Padma Venkatraman, Aida Salazar, Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich, Stacey Lee, Sarah Aronson, Alison Green Myers, Miranda Paul, Chris Tebbetts, Kristin Russo, Victoria Coe, Elly Swartz, Laura Shovan, Megan Hoyt, Lynn Miller Lachmann, Leslie Connor and others...
Our team provides the momentum that helps us bring our community together - and together, as a community, we can affect change.
We welcome you to reach out to us via social media and join the team for the April 20th, 2021 effort.
This year, we hope to share nuanced messages inspired by the words of and amplifying work by powerful BIPOC poets, to speak out against racist hate crimes in general, as well as but not limited to, anti-Asian hate crimes in the United States. For ideas on messaging, please visit DiverseVerse.
